General workplace guidance

iCSP Stewards Network
The iCSP stewards' networks are restricted to accredited stewards. Once you become an accredited steward you will automatically be put forward for approval on to both the national iCSP stewards' network and your own region's stewards' network.
News and information relating to your role as a steward is published on the stewards' networks and you will be sent updates of new content so you can be kept informed, even when time is at a premium. Specific news on issues relating to your region, including regional training days, is posted on a regular basis.

Entries below are given in three groups:
- ACAS (the Advisory, Conciliation, and Arbitration Service) offers conciliation and arbitration services for collective industrial disputes and employment tribunal cases.
- The Equality and Human Rights Commission works to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.
- The Institute of Employment Rights is an independent organisation acting as a focal point for the spread of new ideas in the field of labour law.
- The Labour Research Department (LRD) is an independent research organisation publishing news and information for trade unionists.
- Thompsons Solicitors is one of the largest national employment and specialist personal injury practices in the UK. They specialise in helping unions to protect the interests of their members and publish a wide range of helpful guidance. Thompsons also supplies CSP legal services to members.
- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is Britain’s voice at work. It is the umbrella organisation for 66 affiliated unions - including the CSP - and represents some seven million working people. See more about the TUC below.
The TUC brings unions together to draw up common policies on economic and social issues: indicative areas cover employment law, ways to tackle unemployment and poverty, developing skills and lifelong learning, the environment and other workplace concerns. The TUC also represents working people on public and international bodies.
The CSP has been affiliated to the TUC since 1993 and its officers work closely with TUC colleagues on workplace and wider issues. Shared initiatives often focus on campaigns in support of public services, both health and safety, and equality and diversity issues, and international concerns.
The TUC also facilitates activity in specialist areas such as:
- the Trade Union Disability Alliance (TUDA), of which the CSP is a member, is a campaigning organisation of disabled trade union members
- Unionlearn aims to help unions to become learning organisations, offering programmes for union reps and regional officers and strategic support for national officers
- TUC blogs on a wide range of policy issues.
- The British Orthoptic Society is a TUC-affiliated trade union and professional body.
- The British Dietetic Association is a TUC-affiliated trade union and professional body.
- The British Medical Association (BMA) is one of the largest and most influential trade unions in the health sector, representing the interests of both hospital doctors and GPs.
- The Community and District Nursing Association is another TUC-affiliated trade union and professional body.
- The Federation of Clinical Scientists is the trade union arm of the Association of Clinical Biochemists.
- The GMB (originally General Municipal Boilermakers) is one of the large general trade unions operating in the Health Service. It has over 700,000 members throughout industry but a relatively small NHS membership of around 60,000. It is also TUC-affiliated.
- The Royal College of Midwives is the trade union and professional body representing midwives.
- The Royal College of Nursing is one of the most influential trade unions and professional bodies in the health sector. The RCN represents both qualified nurses and non-qualified grades of nurses and has well over 400,000 members.
- The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists is a TUC-affiliated trade union and professional body.
- The Society of Radiographers is the TUC-affiliated trade union and professional body for radiographers in the NHS.
- Unite is the UK's biggest trade union with some 1.5 million members who work across almost every occupational setting.
- UNISON is a large trade union of some 1.3 million members who provide public services
