CSP members from the North East of England came together on Tuesday 19 May for a regional gathering with a difference. More than 45 members met via Zoom to trial a virtual discussion on managing COVID 19 in the North East.
The feedback revealed that many participants appreciated the opportunity to hear from other CSP members and share experiences. To help continue this a regional post had been set up on the Coronavirus iCSP forum providing a platform for North East based members to discuss how they are managing the pandemic https://www.csp.org.uk/icsp/discussion/north-east-peer-peer-sharing
Please use this post as a starting point for ongoing discussions with your fellow CSP members.
A number of queries and questions were raised during the meeting under the following categories:
Including an FAQon what you need to do to remain safe while treating patients with COVID-19, and your rights and responsibilities. Remember, members must individually determine the level of PPE needed based on the latest national recommendations, local policy and your own risk assessment. Check the guidance regularly as it may change:

The CSP is firmly committed to Community rehab and has produced a policy statement calling for urgent action to ensure rehabilitation needs can be met. The CSP has also developed the first in a series of quality standards to support services providing COVID-19 rehab. T. The challenge is not only in understanding the rehabilitation needs of people recovering from COVID-19, but restarting services safely for those who previously had rehab needs that have been paused during lockdown. Conversations are ongoing on the iCSP network for Community Rehabilitation and on the coronavirus forum:
Mental Health and Wellbeing Resources
A selection of relevant resources can be found here including information on how to have difficult conversations https://www.csp.org.uk/news/coronavirus/taking-care-yourself
Resources for HEIs and Students
The CSP has been working alongside the HCPC, Health Education England and Council of Deans for Health to help shape our response to the COVID-19 outbreak. We have produced guidance and several FAQs for both students and HEIs which will be updated as the situation continues to evolve. One of the challenges we are currently facing is in providing middle years’ students with placement experience in a paid Support Worker role. This is an opportunity to think creatively as to how a placement may be provided that is a meaningful learning experience but also helps the physiotherapy workforce as services reopen.
We would like to thank the regional HEIs and organisations for all their hard work in supporting the students.
Additional information and feedback
The transcript and presentations from the meeting are attached to this news item.
A reminder that for the NHS normal channels of communication, consultation and policies around organisational change should still apply, albeit perhaps on more flexible timescales, and so CSP stewards and safety reps should be approached with any concerns in these areas.
