Professional Liability Insurance (PLI)

As an independent practitioner you benefit from the CSP PLI scheme subject to policy T&Cs.

The CSP PLI scheme provides (amongst other things) cover for claims of clinical negligence which arise from your individual physiotherapy work where you fail to provide a reasonable standard of care, causing harm to your patients that is proven to be wholly, or in part, from your negligence.

What's included?

The scheme covers all activities within the scope of physiotherapy practice – there is no list of ‘included’ activities but the treatment of animals and some professional footballers, and acupuncture when used for fertility treatment, are excluded. Digital and virtual services are covered with some overseas exclusions.

It covers you wherever you work (e.g. hospitals, clinics, gyms, sports venues and patients' homes) and whether you are full- or part-time.

Is my business covered?

The CSP scheme is not business insurance and separate insurance may be required for some types of corporate entities and businesses formed by members.

However, businesses comprising private limited companies or partnerships owned entirely by CSP members are now included within the CSP PLI scheme, provided that annual turnover does not exceed £75,000, subject to policy terms and conditions.

All other corporate entities including private limited companies and partnerships owned solely by CSP members with an annual turnover between £75,000 and £300,000 can purchase similar cover as an extension to the Members PLI scheme at discounted rates.
