CSP PLI in the Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland (ROI) is considered an overseas territory for the purposes of the CSP PLI scheme. However, special circumstances may apply as the ROI shares a land border with the UK.

You must be clear on your circumstances to determine if you require additional PLI to work in the ROI. If your question is not answered here you should contact James Hallam directly.

I live in Northern Ireland and my service is delivered in both Northern Ireland and the ROI. Am I covered by the CSP PLI scheme?

Yes. Members who are ordinarily and permanently resident in the UK may work in-person in the ROI without restriction. In reality this scenario only occurs for members who live in areas of Northern Ireland that are within commuting distance of the ROI. Normal terms and conditions apply.

I live in Northern Ireland and I have a practice that is based in the ROI. Am I covered to work from that ROI practice?

Yes if you can demonstrate that you are permanently and ordinarily resident in the UK and that you commute to your place of work in the ROI. Otherwise overseas cover has a 180-day temporary limit. If you have a permanent practice in the ROI and intend to regularly work from that practice and you will not be resident in the UK, you must seek local insurance for you work from that practice.

I live in the ROI and work in Northern Ireland. Am I covered by the CSP PLI scheme?

No. If you are ‘ordinarily resident’ in the ROI you are not covered by the CSP PLI scheme.

I am an Irish citizen but I am living in the UK while I complete my pre-registration physiotherapy programme. Am I covered?

Yes. You must be temporarily living in the UK for the period of your study and your programme must be an HCPC approved pre-registration physiotherapy course. You will be covered for your work in the UK on placement, and for any overseas practice placements in the countries covered by the PLI scheme, including practice placements in your home country the ROI, up to the 180-day temporary overseas limit.

I live in the ROI and my service is delivered in both Northern Ireland and ROI. Am I covered?

No. You must be ordinarily resident in the UK to benefit from the CSP PLI scheme.

I’m an Irish citizen and am ordinarily resident in the UK now. I am returning to Ireland for 9 months to work. Am I covered?

No. Members who are ordinarily resident in the UK only have up to 180 days' temporary overseas cover. This does not cover the first 180 days of your period in Ireland. You must arrange temporary local cover.
