Professor Caroline Alexander and Dr Peter Hartley have been awarded CSP distinguished service awards in recognition of their outstanding service and excellence to the CSP and its members.
The CSP awards professional awards every year. These include fellowships, honorary fellowships and distinguished service awards. These acknowledge the contribution made by members, and notable non-members, to advancing the profession through their outstanding contribution to and impact on physiotherapy practice.
Professor Caroline Alexander
Professor Caroline Alexander has been awarded a distinguished service award for her leadership in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, clinical research, and allied health professional development. Caroline said:
I am so grateful to the CSP for the award and touched that my AHP colleagues conspired to nominate me. My journey has been inspired and supported by many.
'My mother, Hanna Alexander, (a physiotherapist herself), Ann Thomson, Dr Phil Harrison, and funders including Versus Arthritis, the Wellcome Trust and NIHR. I feel privileged to have worked alongside wonderful colleagues at Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust and the college'.
Caroline recently retired as lead clinical academic at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. With a career spanning over 30 years, she has combined clinical expertise with groundbreaking research in the areas of neurorehabilitation, hypermobility, swallowing disorders, digital health technologies, and stroke recovery.
Caroline has mentored and inspired numerous PhD candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and early career researchers. She is a sought-after keynote speaker and prolific educator and has shaped national policy and professional pathways. I pass the baton on to my cousin, Nadia Coburn, newly qualified, and excited at the start of her physiotherapy journey.’
Caroline said:
As I retire, I’m confident my AHP colleagues will inspire others to practice clinically and research that practice together. I pass the batton on to my cousin, who is newly qualified, and excited to start her physiotherapy journey.
Dr Peter Hartley
Dr Peter Hartley, a clinical academic physiotherapist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, has been awarded a distinguished service award for his exceptional contribution to the physiotherapy profession, specialising in frailty and older person’s care.
Peter said:
I am very honoured to receive this award. It was a wonderful surprise. The award reflects how lucky I have been during my career to work with and learn from so many amazing individuals, both clinically and academically.
As a clinical academic at Cambridge University Hospitals, Peter has combined clinical excellence, research, and mentorship to transform rehabilitation for older people, including those recovering from stroke.
He has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers, secured four major research fellowships, and influenced international policy through his work on the world falls guidelines. Peter’s leadership in mentoring over 100 early-career professionals and championing inclusive patient engagement has left a lasting mark on our profession.
Peter said:
I’m very fortunate to be working in a very supportive and nurturing environment for clinical academic nursing, midwifery and allied health professions in Cambridge, without which I would not be in the position I am today.
Formal recognition
Caroline and Peter will be formally recognised during the professional awards ceremony at the CSP Annual Conference in November. Fellowship recipients for 2025 will also be awarded during the ceremony.
