Sexual orientation equality legislation

The Equality Act 2010 which came into effect in October 2010 simplified discrimination law and enhanced workers’ rights in this area. It replaced and condensed over 100 pieces of anti-discrimination legislation including the Sexual Orientation Regulations 2003 which outlawed discrimination or harassment of a person on the grounds of their sexual orientation. In this information paper, the main provisions of the Equality Act 2010 relating to sexual orientation are examined, along with their likely effect on workers.
