Role Overview

As a Children’s Occupational Therapist, you shall undertake all aspects of your clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner with children mainly in an outpatient setting and provide a client-centred and evidence-based service to both local and international patients.

We are looking for a candidate who is a good listener and able to communicate efficiently with the patient, their families, the wider MDT and other agencies including sponsors - verbally, non-verbally and in writing.

You will offer specialist assessments, intervention and parent/carer education to a caseload of children with varied and sometimes complex needs. You will receive referrals mostly from outpatient consultants, GP clinics and external routes including nurseries/schools and self-referrals, but, may also get referrals from the Children’s inpatient ward.

The majority of your caseload will include children with neurodevelopmental conditions as well as and sensory processing deficits. You have up-to-date knowledge on evidence based, standardised assessments and outcome measures and are able to assess your patients’ equipment needs.

What you’ll do

• Use reflective practise and clinical reasoning in undertaking specialist assessment in order to provide individualised assessments and interventions for each patient.
• Obtain informed, valid consent on an ongoing basis which endeavours to keep patients involved in their own health care plan.
• Liaise with colleagues as appropriate to ensure the effective co-ordination of the patient treatment and ongoing aftercare as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely patient treatment records and reports in line with local and RCOT professional standards.
• Ensure clinical effectiveness by reflecting current evidence base, national guidelines and use of outcome measures in clinical management of your caseload.
• Manage clinical risk within your caseload at all times and ensure potential clinical risk is effectively communicated and managed.
• Be responsible for the ethical, safe and competent recommendation and provision of therapy equipment, splints, orthoses and braces.

What you’ll bring

• Degree in  Occupational Therapy
• HCPC registration
• RCOT membership
• Proven up-to-date knowledge and experience in a variety of physical conditions with children including neurodevelopment and DCD
• Knowledge of standardised paediatric assessments and outcome measures.
• Sound clinical reasoning skills
• UK healthcare experience
• Experience in managing a mixed caseload where demands for different skills are expected simultaneously.
