We have an exciting opportunity for Qualified Physiotherapists to join our expanding Musculoskeletal ( MSK) Outpatient Service at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
Our MSK physiotherapy service is a rapid access, self-referral system whereby patients can access our service within 72 hours of telephoning for an appointment. This means we do not hold a waiting list. Currently around half of our patients self-refer without having seen their GP first.
We provide a Single Point of Access (SPoA) into secondary care for all patients with hip, knee and spinal conditions. As a result, patients no longer need to see their GP in order to be referred into an Orthopaedic Consultant. This has freed GP time allowing them to see more none MSK clinical cases. The introduction of SPoA through physiotherapy has also produced significant cost savings in Orthopaedic Services. The patient journey from primary into secondary care has become more efficient, and referrals into secondary care are now more timely and appropriate than they were before SPoA was introduced.
Due to the success of our service, the local Clinical Commissioning Group has provided funding to support further expansion and service development. This means we are now in the enviable position of being able to increase our workforce and offer new job opportunities as a consequence.
We pride ourselves in being an innovative and forward thinking department. We are currently developing and delivering ‘fee paying’ services which run alongside our NHS service, the money from which is being reinvested back into NHS MSK Physiotherapy. We support staff development through: in-house Clinical Interest Group meetings (three full-day training days/year), peer review, regular complex case joint assessment clinics with our specialist orthopaedic physiotherapists, offer fellowship training in spinal, lower limb and upper limb specialties, and support staff attending external courses and conferences.
