Gathering information about applicants through social media sites is not specifically unlawful but may result in unlawful discrimination if the information is not available on the application form (for example, ethnicity and sexuality).
Unfortunately, the practice is thought to be widespread in the UK. As a member of a regulated profession it is essential that you maintain a professional internet ‘footprint’ and be aware of the many pitfalls.
