Skill Acquisition in Stroke Rehabilitation

This is a one day workshop, covering current theory and evidence relating to motor control, motor learning, and skill acquisition. Attendees will come away with a sound understanding of the current evidence base in this field, along with practical examples of how to apply this in clinical practice.
1. Describe the processes underlying neurological recovery in someone with stroke
2. Critique current theory and evidence relating to motor control and motor learning in stroke
3. Describe the ways in which practice may be structured to maximise functional recovery
4. Understand the role of instruction and feedback in motor performance and motor learning
5. Recognise the role of the therapist as a coach, and discuss the ways in which healthcare professionals can enhance engagement and motivation.
6. Apply and adapt current theory and evidence relating to motor learning to a broad range of clinical scenarios (e.g. those with profound weakness, cognitive and language impairment)

Who can attend?
These workshops are aimed at physiotherapists and occupational therapists with an interest in stroke rehabilitation. However, the principles are applicable more widely in neurological rehabilitation. Experienced therapy assistants are also welcome to attend.
We pitch the content at those working at Band 6 level. However, we regularly have attendees with a broad range of experience, and receive positive feedback from all levels.
CPD: 6 hours
Fee: £130 or £70 for South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust employees
Limited funded places may be available for AHPs & Nurses working for the NHS within the East Midlands.
