Evidence-Based Practical Application for the Treatment of Cerebral Palsy for

Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists

 

28th February – 4th March 2022

This course has been designed for physiotherapists and occupational therapists working in clinical practice and focuses on the latest evidence and theory to present a framework for clinical reasoning in the treatment of the child with cerebral palsy.

 

This is best attended as a 5 day course as follows:

The Core Course available on 28th February – 2nd March 2022 consists of Modules 1-3; these are a mandatory pre-requisite for any additional modules.

An additional Upper Limb Module is available on the 3rd March 2022 following completion of the Core Course.

CPD: 6.75 hours.

An additional Lower Limb Module is available on the 4th March 2022 following completion of the Core Course.

Refresher modules will also be offered at a later date and may be attended following completion of the Core Course.

 

Each module consists of lectures, case presentations, practical sessions and video analysis.

 

Delegates will have the opportunity to consolidate their learning at the end of each day in a brief question and answer session.

 

Handouts and references will be provided.

 

 

Core Course: Module One: Evidence-Based Practical Application

 

Following completion delegates will have an improved understanding of:

  • Defining and describing cerebral palsy and its impact on activity and development.
  • Identification of impairments in cerebral palsy.
  • Modelling therapeutic intervention using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. 
  • Recognising how current knowledge on motor learning can guide therapeutic intervention.
  • Understanding the importance of targeted activity.

 

Core Course: Module Two: Child Development and its Application to Treatment of the Child with Cerebral Palsy​​

 

Following completion delegates will have an improved understanding of:

  • Defining and describing how typical development is interfered with in cerebral palsy.
  • Understanding how treatment can be modelled in a child development framework.
  • Recognising how current knowledge on motor learning can guide therapeutic intervention.
  • Assessment and treatment using functional anatomy. 
  • The role of neuroplasticity in therapeutic interventions.
  • How understanding motor development can influence the selection of motor assessment tools for early identification of cerebral palsy and to guide practice.

 

 

Core Course: Module Three: Setting Goals and Measuring Outcomes​​

 

Following completion delegates will have an improved understanding of:

  • Defining and describing goals.
  • How we set the goals? 
  • How to match the goal and the outcome measure.
  • How to select and critique the outcome assessment tool.

 

 

Optional - Module 4: Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) in the Young Child with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy

Following completion delegates will have an improved understanding of: 

  • Defining usual assisting hand function.
  • Identification of abnormal assisting hand function: why and how.
  • Key current upper limb assessment.
  • Recognising the importance of motor learning theory to guide the CIMT intervention.
  • Modelling the CIMT intervention using the international classification of functioning.
  • Critique of the different CIMT methodologies.
  • An example of use of CIMT in clinical practice and how it compares to other upper limb interventions.

 

Optional - Module 5: Spasticity Management for the Gastrocsoleus Complex, including the role of Below-Knee Plastering, Botulinum Toxin and

Orthotics​​

Following completion delegates will have an improved understanding of:

  • Defining and describing spasticity.
  • Understanding its impact on activity and the immature central nervous system.
  • Recognising the importance of activity in relation to the gastrocsoleus complex.
  • The role of adjuncts to treatment including below-knee plasters, botulinum toxin and orthotics.

 

CPD certificate of attendance awarded at end of the course
