NHS England has said that the funding, which was allocated by the government last year, will be used to upgrade its technology, digital and data systems.

This includes the NHS App’s new AI triage tool which aims to help direct patients to appropriate services. The tool will be rolled out to more than 200,000 patients over the next 12 months, before becoming available to all NHS App users by April 2028.

Additionally, NHS England has said it will support a national roll out of AI tools which aim to capture conversations between patients and NHS staff to produce real-time transcriptions and clinical summaries. The initial phase of the rollout will cover hospital appointments that do not require an overnight stay.

Euan McComiskie, CSP health informatics lead, said: 'While it's encouraging to see NHS England investing in technology-enabled service innovation, we are concerned that some of our members and their organisations may not yet have the confidence, skills or system infrastructure needed to adopt these tools successfully.

Successful implementation of new AI tools will depend on staff receiving the right training, support and guidance, as well as having access to the necessary software and hardware.

The CSP has developed an online education programme to support members, as well as all other AHPs, to build foundational knowledge and skills in digital and data.
