Pay parity must be restored for HSC staff in Northern Ireland

Health unions including the CSP are calling on the Northern Ireland health minister to restore pay parity with the rest of the UK as a matter of urgency.

Mike Nesbitt said this week that he had found around half of the money needed to implement the 3.6 per cent pay rise for Health and Social Care staff that was due in April.

But the remainder was still being sought to provide the increase in full, Mr Nesbitt said.

This means pay for HSC staff in Northern Ireland remain behind NHS workers in England, Scotland and Wales, where uplifts have been delivered.

Health unions, including the CSP, have issued a joint statement in response, demanding that the minister and wider executive stand by commitments made on pay. The statement said:

Health trade unions have been clear that pay parity is the absolute minimum that is required.

'The funding to make this a reality must be found.

The CSP has been consulting with members over what action they would be willing to take should the pay rise not be delivered.

Other unions are also taking the temperature of their membership while discussions continue with the Department of Health.
