Cut delays, cut costs

Allied health professionals (AHPs) at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have contributed to efficiency savings of £40,000.

Through the Department of Health’s service improvement programme earlier this year, the trust changed the way it provides simple equipment to patients and improved services.

For bathing and personal hygiene services, a dedicated team of band 3s was created to carry out non-complex bathing assessments and provide equipment – jobs previously carried out by a range of AHPs from band 3s through to band 8s.

Older patients’ waits for equipment were cut from six months to five days. Telephone follow-ups and a standardised model of care were also introduced.

‘It’s about using a very small, simple idea, to have a huge impact on the way the service is delivered,’ said trust physiotherapy lead Louise Lewis.
