Finding your way around
Use the main navigation area on the left of the page to move around the site. If you can't find what you are looking for, try browsing the site map, or enter some key words into the search box, visible in the header bar on every page.
Registering, logging in and logging out
Many pages on the site are hidden from users that aren't logged in. Only current CSP members can register for a username and password, but when they've done so, they can log in and have access to a wider choice of content.
Look out for messages at the top of pages that say "CSP members can login to see the full version of this page". Also, if you can't see something that you think should be there, try logging in before anything else.
Please also note that you will be automatically logged out from the site after 10 minutes if left idle.
Problems logging in and registering
If you can't log in or register, please contact our enquiries team, but before you do so, make sure you have read the following suggestions:
Login details from the previous site
Usernames and passwords from the previous version of the CSP website will not automatically work on the new one. Every CSP member needs to register a new account the first time they want to access member-only content on the new site.
Membership number and name don't match
If the registration form tells you that your membership number doesn't match your name, make sure that you are entering your full CSP membership number. In most cases this will be a six digit number beginning with a zero, eg 099999. If you have a five digit number, try adding a zero to the front of it. Student member numbers are also six digits but have an additional S in front of them, eg S999999. Associate members have a leading A, eg A999999.
Forgotten password
You can retrieve your password if you can remember your username and you entered an email address when you registered. A form will ask you for your CSP membership number, your username and your email address. When you submit the form, it will email your password to your registered email address.
If you have also forgotten your username, you need to contact our enquiries team.
You don't have an email address
To register without an email address, please enter noemail@csp.org.uk into the email box.
Logging out
You can log out from the site at any time by clicking on the 'log out' link underneath the search box on any page. You will be automatically logged out of the site if at any time, you don't select a page within ten minutes.
Searching
There is a site search box in the header bar of every page, as well as a link to the advanced search page. The advanced search allows you to specify what type of content you want to search for, eg news items, publications, or events. You can also choose to order your search results by relevance or date.
There are also specific search facilities in many sections, including news, publications, and related websites. On these pages, your search will be restricted to just that type of content, eg the news search will only search for news items.
There are a few tips to searching that may help you find more relevant results:
| Phrases | Wrapping more than one word in "" will bring back pages containing that exact phrase. |
| Wildcards | Use a * character to signify one or more missing characters. test* will return test, tests and tester. |
| Fuzzy searches | Use a ~ character to signify one or more missing characters. roam~ will return roam, roams and foam. |
| Boolean operators | Use OR between words to search for one or another term. The OR must be in capitals. this OR that will return pages that have at least one of this or that in them. |
| Use AND between words to search for both terms. The AND must be in capitals. this AND that will return pages that have both this or that in them. |
|
| Use NOT between words to search for one term but not the other. The NOT must be in capitals. this NOT that will return pages that this in them but not that. |
Downloading files
We aim to use two formats when publishing documents for download: PDF and HTML. Sometimes we may have to also use Microsoft Word documents. Where possible, when we publish a document as a PDF or Word file, we try to accompany it with an HTML version to aid accessibility.
Where we don't offer an HTML alternative version of a PDF file, you can try Adobe's online PDF converter which attempts to reproduce the content of submitted PDFs into either a text or HTML file. You can find out more about accessing PDFs at Adobe's Access Adobe website.
When clicking on a link to download a file, your computer will either save the file for you on your computer, or it will try to open it directly, depending on how your web browser is configured.
To open these files you will need the following software:
HTML: any web browser.
PDF: Adobe Reader, available for free from the Adobe website (look for the link on the homepage labelled 'Get Adobe Reader'). Adobe Acrobat will also open PDF files but must be purchased.
Word: Microsoft Word, available to purchase widely.
