You can be a workplace rep

Representing other members in the workplace is the perfect kick-start to your career, says Lee Bowles

Trade union support can be particularly vital for early-career members, such as those completing pre-registration studies. Union members are more likely to have a secure and decently paid job, with more influence over your working hours and patterns.

It may surprise you to learn however that many graduates – and others in the preliminary stages of their career – also chose to step forward as workplace reps soon after entering employment.

You don’t need to have a long history in the workplace to know when something isn’t right. Nor should only those with multiple years of employment be able to speak out about bad workplace practices.

By speaking out and representing your colleagues, you’ll quickly gain an array of communication, campaigning and negotiating competences.

The CSP’s workplace reps – stewards and safety reps – are the lifeblood of our trade union. These members are elected to advise and represent others when experiencing problems in their workplace.

These positions also open new doors for your professional development. By speaking out and representing your colleagues, you’ll quickly gain an array of communication, campaigning and negotiating competences.

And all new CSP reps are supported with full training and ongoing peer-support.  

The CSP diversity networks also offer great opportunities to kick-start your career. As a qualified member you can sit on their committees in a wide range of leading roles such as a network chair, communications lead or student lead. Here you will represent network members, their work stream and help to influence areas such as CSP policy.
