This type of leave is designed to give parents more time with their children – for example, to visit schools or for settling into new childcare settings.
Employees who have been with their employer for at least a year are entitled to a total of 18 weeks’ (ordinary) parental leave for each child up until the child’s 18th birthday. There is no statutory right to pay for this leave.
If you work in the NHS, the leave is normally unpaid unless there is a local agreement for some to be paid.
If you work outside the NHS, check your contract to see if you have any entitlements above the statutory minimum.
