This information pack provides advice and guidance on the right to request flexible working and the benefits it brings and considers how to overcome any potential barriers to its introduction.
The pack is a key resource in the CSP’s ‘Building a better balance’ campaign which aims to raise awareness about flexible working and give practical advice on ensuring that alternative working patterns work well for staff, employers and patients alike.
The resource has been updated to reflect changes to the contractual NHS Terms and Conditions Handbook introduced September 2021. The Handbook covers NHS staff in England and Wales, with similar initiatives expected in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Find out more.
CSP stewards and safety reps working within NHS organisations should use this resource to:
find out how your trust is doing on flexible working, using the NHS staff survey and other sources;
check in with other staffside unions to make sure local policy and guidance is reviewed in line with NHS Staff Council guidance for joint union-employer partnerships on reviewing flexible working policies; and
get in touch if you have successfully (or not) renegotiated local flexible working policy or guidance, or supported a member with a flexible working request.
