NHS pension – temporary retire and return rules extended to October 2022

Rules for retired NHS pension scheme members that supported them to return to the workforce during the pandemic were relaxed by the government last year.

Emergency legislation came into force on 25 March 2020 that enabled temporary suspension of:

  • the 16 hour rule
  • abatement for special class status holders in the 1995 section
  • draw down abatement in the 2008 section and 2015 scheme

The suspension of the rules supported retired members to return to the workplace, without reducing or ceasing a member’s pension that was already being claimed.

Update - 15 March 2022

Following lobbying by the CSP and other trade unions, the Department of Health and Social Care opened a consultation, seeking views on proposals to continue the temporary NHS Pension Scheme easements that would otherwise have expired on 24 March 2022.

This government has now confirmed that the ‘retire and return’ easements will now be extended until 31 October 2022.

The normal NHS pension scheme rules on re-employment can be found here.
