Recorded Physiotherapy Webinars: Innovative provision of CPD to Physiotherapists working in busy independent sector, MSK clinical environments.

Purpose

The purpose of this service evaluation was to help better understand the impact and value of running a Recorded Physiotherapy Webinar (RPW) programme to Nuffield Health Physiotherapists.

RPW's are a series of 20-40 minute presentations recorded with both visuals (PowerPoint) and audio (presenter's voice). They are delivered by subject matter experts from across Nuffield Health and aim to promote learning on clinical topics (i.e. ACL rehabilitation, Shoulder red-flags and Cervicogenic headaches).

A total of 14 self-selected RPW's are currently available and can be accessed from anywhere, at any time after the recording via a Learning Management System (LMS).

On a scale from 0 (no value) to 10 (high value), Physiotherapists rated the current RPW programme as highly valuable
(mean 8.76, SD 1.55, n=72).
On a 5-point Likert-scale, 79.2% either agreed (61.1%) or strongly agreed (18.1%)
the RPW's changed or influenced their clinical practice...
...81.9% either agreed (59.7%) or strongly agreed (22.2%)
the RPW's were thought provoking and...
...47.2% either agreed (36.1%) or strongly agreed (11.1%)
the RPW's promoted discussion with peers or colleagues.

Approach

A mixed methods design was used in this service evaluation. An online survey based platform (Microsoft Forms) was used to capture Physiotherapists perceptions using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative metrics included self-reported ratings, Net Promotor Scores (NPS) and Likert scales. Participants were also encouraged to leave written comments relating to the programme.

Outcomes

72 Physiotherapists responded to the survey.

On a scale from 0 (no value) to 10 (high value), Physiotherapists rated the current RPW programme as highly valuable (mean 8.76, SD 1.55, n=72).

The RPW programme received am NPS of +46 (Promotors: 48, Passives: 23, Detractors: 8), showing that Physiotherapists would recommend RPW's to a colleague.

On a 5-point Likert-scale, 79.2% either agreed (61.1%) or strongly agreed (18.1%) the RPW's changed or influenced their clinical practice, 81.9% either agreed (59.7%) or strongly agreed (22.2%) the RPW's were thought provoking and 47.2% either agreed (36.1%) or strongly agreed (11.1%) the RPW's promoted discussion with peers or colleagues.

Simple thematic analysis of comments showed the RPW's are perceived as a great resource (1. They represent a good resource for those working in areas as lone practitioners with little or no local CPD opportunities, or geographically situated away from popular internal/external CPD locations; 2. I think it´s a great service and use it a lot. Shifting through research can time a lot of time. Presenting this in a pragmatic way is absolutely vital for the application of research to practise. 3. An excellent format for busy staff to keep up with CPD).

The main challenge that Physiotherapists experienced related to time accessing RPW's in a busy clinic diary (1. These valuable learning experiences can be "put on the back burner" quite easily during a busy working day; 2. I think it´s a great resource, my issue is finding meaningful time to listen to them and ingest the info/put into practice).

Cost and savings

The results of this service evaluation suggest that RPW's are an effective way of delivering CPD to Physiotherapists in MSK clinical environments. The RPW's are well received, highly valued and have the potential to change or influence clinical practice. The main barrier to this method of delivering CPD is the Physiotherapists finding meaningful time to watch the RPW's in a busy clinic diary.

Implications

RPW's could be a valuable addition to a Physiotherapists' CPD offering, especially in those Physiotherapists that may struggle to access face to face learning opportunities.

Top three learning points

  1. Physiotherapists perceive RPW’s as a valuable resource to support their CPD activity.
  2. RPW’s demonstrate a cost and time effective method of CPD delivery.
  3. RPW’s have a place in a blended learning package of CPD opportunities.
