In review: our featured book and web resources

In review looks at our featured book Sports injury Prevention and Rehabilitation; the Prostate Cancer new online learning platform and Surviving Brain Damage After Assault and lots more for your reading enjoyment.

Featured book

Sports injury Prevention and Rehabilitation David Joyce and Daniel Lewindon

This book’s editors have worked in a physiotherapy and coaching capacity for various high-level sports teams, including rugby and football. This is their second joint publication, and follows the release of High Performance Training for Sports in 2014.

Divided into six parts, the book offers a series of expert masterclasses reviewing current best practice in the sports injury prevention and rehabilitation field. As each masterclass is written independently, readers can dip into the material rather than reading it from cover to cover. The authors supply extensive reference lists at the end of each chapter which direct readers to further reading and reassure them that the information is up-to-date and evidence-based.

Chapters in the first two parts review the performance team and athletic competencies, covering topics such as psychology, nutrition, risk of injury profiling and the role of core stability and flexibility in injury prevention and performance. Part three includes chapters reviewing injuries based on tissue type for example muscle, tendon and bone.

The next part, on managing the injured athlete, is divided into regions of the body, such as the spine and shoulder, with illustrated examples of progressive rehabilitation exercises and discussion of best practice protocols. At the end, parts five and six cover topics such as pre-season training, environmental stress and the female athlete.

Many books are available on the subject of sports injuries and it can be difficult to know which one to choose. If you are interested in looking at one specific area in great depth then this might not be the book for you as it covers so many. It would, however, be a very useful reference book for students, physiotherapists involved in sport and coaches in the field of sports medicine where best practice is continually evolving. It is one of the most up-to-date texts available.
