Physios are commended for Pilates research

Two physiotherapists have won a prize for their research into how Pilates could help women with continence problems.

Samantha Head and Faith Gage, who work at Colchester General Hospital in Essex, were commended for their ongoing trial into the use of Modified Pilates alongside standard physiotherapy care for urinary incontinence.

It was awarded at the National Institute for Health Research’s Essex and Hertfordshire Comprehensive Local Research Network Best Practice Event Awards.

The 33-month study is recruiting 100 women who have continence problems.

Half of the group will be given standard physiotherapy and the other half will also attend Modified Pilates classes for six weeks.

The trial is being carried out jointly by Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Essex.

Ms Head and Mrs Gage won £100 to spend on personal development and training.
