The government is proposing some fundamental changes to the NHS pension scheme that will impact on members' future income. The CSP is therefore urging members again to respond to the consultation exercise to reinforce the arguments put forward on their behalf by the Society.
Members in England and Wales have until April 11 to get their submissions in. The deadline for members in Northern Ireland is April 30 and in Scotland April 25. Among the most contentious issues arising from the review are proposed changes to the normal pension age - which the government wants to increase to 65 for all public sector workers - and the possible replacement of the final salary scheme with one based on career average earnings.
Last month demonstrations took place around the UK to protest at the plans to raise the pension age from 60 to 65. CSP officers were among the thousands of protesters (see Frontline, March 2).Members in England and Wales wanting to respond to the consultation exercise should send their submission to NHS Employers, which is running the pension review for the Department of Health. Members should use the designated response form, which can be found at the end of section 12 of the main consultation document (see details below).
