The closing date for entries in the 2011 Work the World prize draw is fast approaching, so dont miss out on your chance to win a life-changing trip.
In conjunction with Work the World, the CSP is offering two students the chance to win a one-month overseas placement in Ghana, India, Tanzania or Zanzibar. The package includes airfare, accommodation and meals. Physiotherapist Alice Brisco, one of the two lucky winners from 2010, chose to spend her month’s overseas placement in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, at the Muhimbili University Hospital. ‘The difference in culture was massive, and the hospital also took some getting used to,’ says Alice Brisco. ‘Infection control didn’t seem to exist, the floors of the wards were not tiled and consisted of dirt, and people’s mattresses were on the floor.’ The majority of patients that Alice Brisco treated were involved in road traffic accidents with multiple fractures and severe brain injuries. But there were some more unusual cases too, including a man in intensive care who had been bitten by a hippo after swimming across a lake. ‘When I wasn’t in the hospital I had plenty of free time for sightseeing and soaking up the culture,’ says Alice Brisco. ‘I had an amazing time in the Work the World house, met lots of nice people, and gained some life-long experiences.’ To enter the prize draw send an email with your full name and contact details, and the subject ‘Work the World prize draw’ to Jamie Carson, CSP students’ officer, on firstname.lastname@example.org. The closing date for entries is 31 January 2011.
