Health unions, including the CSP, are consulting on new arrangements for mileage allowances laid out by the NHS staff council.
The council has proposed a scheme that will see all staff reimbursed the same rate for business mileage, whatever type of vehicle they drive. Currently there is no agreed method of measuring changes in fuel prices and motoring cost and so no way of ensuring that reimbursement tracks these changes. The Society industrial relations committee has endorsed the proposals and the CSP is seeking members’ views. In the new scheme, the AA guide to motoring costs will be used to calculate mileage rates. These will be based on the cost of running an average-priced car that is replaced after five years and assumes an annual mileage of 10,000 miles. If agreed, the mileage reimbursement scheme will be incorporated into the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook and will come into effect on 1 July, 2013. The final decision on the proposals will be made at the NHS staff council meeting on 19 November.
