Cancer carers

Physiotherapists were honoured in Welsh awards to mark the centenary of Macmillan cancer support.

A lymphoedema specialist physio from Swansea won the professional leadership award. A physio-led therapy team from Cardiff took the professional team award.

Melanie Lewis, lead Macmillan lymphoedema physiotherapy specialist at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, was appointed the first lymphoedema physio specialist in mid and west Wales in 2000.

She established a lymphoedema clinical network, improved data collection, and as service improvements were achieved she raised awareness of the impact of the condition on patients’ quality of life, mobility and self-esteem.

‘Even though I have been involved in lymphoedema for over 14 years,’ said Ms Lewis, ‘I am still passionate about the condition and strive to make services available for all sufferers across Wales.’

Helen Tyler’s team of five allied health profession disciplines deliver rehabilitation care to inpatients and outpatients at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. They were presented with the professional team award.
