Advice line - Terms and conditions apply

Be sure to understand the terms of the CSP’s professional liability insurance package to avoid being left uninsured, warns Pip White

The CSP provides a comprehensive package of insurance to eligible members of the CSP.

Full terms and conditions are at: www.csp.org.uk/professional-union/practice/insurance

Individual members benefit from £5m medical malpractice and professional liability insurance (PLI) cover for activities that are within the scope of physiotherapy practice.

You must be on the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) register and maintain a CSP membership category that offers PLI.

It’s important to note that some categories of membership, such as overseas, don’t offer PLI.

You can increase your individual cover to £10m by joining PhysioFirst or the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, or by applying direct to the CSP’s broker.

Members also benefit from £10m of individual public liability cover for claims not related to medical malpractice.

The PLI scheme provides restricted cover for medical malpractice claims against physiotherapy businesses, providing they are wholly owned by physiotherapists who are CSP members.

This limited cover benefits self-employed sole trader physiotherapists who choose to incorporate for tax reasons. No cover is provided for any other corporate risk, such as employer’s liability.

Under the package, members who are ordinarily resident in the UK may work temporarily overseas for up to 180 days in any 12-month period.

Members working for the armed forces are exempt from the 180-day limit. Members can work in the Republic of Ireland for any length of time, but must demonstrate that they are ordinarily resident in the UK.

Student members benefit from the scheme provided their work is supervised by an HCPC registered physiotherapist or other health professional.

Foreign students who are temporarily resident in the UK for the duration of their studies do not have PLI cover for their electives if their elective is in their permanent country of residence.
