Occupational Stress: Understanding and Management

15th November 2021

Venue: London Road Community Hospital, Derby DE1 2QY.

Speaker: Dr Aftab Laher

Consultant Clinical Psychologist/ Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist

Ref. 2960

Occupational stress is a complex concept which has been defined in terms of a continuum of work pressure, strain, burnout and ill-health. It can often be manifested in physical and mental health symptoms and disorders. The concept of occupational stress has received much attention, especially over the last few decades, in the scientific literature, across the media, within government policy initiatives and in everyday life.  While some have argued that there has been an ‘overkill’ on the concept, most researchers agree, and the empirical literature supports the view, that occupational stress is a real, prevalent problem that has adverse psychological, physical and socio-economic implications for society at all levels:  individual, family, group, and organisation.

This introductory workshop will aim to increase your understanding of:

  • Nature of occupational stress
  • Theories of occupational stress
  • Assessing occupational stress
  • The HSE Management Standards Approach
  • Organisational Interventions
  • Individual approach to stress management

The workshop will draw on the wider psychological literature with a particular focus on occupational stress in healthcare settings.

The workshop will be interactive and will include small group exercises.

It is hoped that by the end of the workshop delegates will have enhanced their knowledge, skills and confidence in identifying, assessing and managing occupational stress from a personal, organisational and service user perspective.
