Dizziness and the Neck by Mr Paul Chatrath, Consultant ENT Surgeon
Patients often present to the ENT surgeon with dizziness and/or vertigo where no primary inner ear cause can be found. In these situations, cervicogenic problems represent one of the more common causes. Mr Chatrath will discuss the difference between dizziness and vertigo and outline the variety of possible different aetiologies. He will then focus on how the neck may be responsible for feelings of dizziness by briefly outlining the pathophysiology and peripheral inputs that contribute to the sense of balance. A discussion of how these normally functioning inputs can go wrong in cervical spine problems and look at the distinction between cervicogenic problems and other causes of dizziness/vertigo will then follow. There will be a particular focus on the relevant points in history and examination that can help to discriminate patients with cervicogenic, (as opposed to an inner ear), cause for their symptoms who might present with similar/overlapping symptoms.
