Workshop Description

In this workshop you will learn Tai Chi movements from the popular Yang style.
You will be provided with internet access to a video of these movements prior to the workshop.
This is a good introduction to Tai Chi and how it works for Health and Wellbeing.
It is a low-cost activity that does not require equipment, it can be done anywhere, at any time, and the movements are easy to learn.
There are many articles and research papers on the effectiveness of this traditional Chinese Tai Chi exercise.
The purpose of the workshop is to enable you to incorporate these exercises appropriately within your clinical or exercise environment. You will learn how to teach these movements safely and adapt appropriately for your participants.
It can also be incorporated into a rehabilitation environment as part of an existing treatment plan. Similarly, because of its simplicity, certain aspects of this Tai Chi program can also be prescribed to patients as a self-care/home activity.

Workshop Structure

This will be taught using video conferencing technology using Zoom.
The formal training will be split into four, four-hour sessions with theory and practical in each scheduled over two consecutive weekends. In addition to this there will be a one to one tutorial session which will be arranged at a mutually convenient time.
There will be an introduction to Tai Chi and the history.
An appropriate and relevant association with Anatomy, Physiology and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Practical learning of the Tai Chi movements.
Demonstrating these movements.
Discussion about teaching methods and teaching safely.
Practical adaptations for teaching safely.

Specific Objectives

Each participant will understand the Tai Chi movements and how they can be an effective exercise in healthcare.
You will develop how to deliver this set of movements safely to your participants.
This will be a good introduction to Tai Chi and a foundation to other Medical Qigong and Tai Chi exercises.

Evaluation

Workshop participants will be expected to participate in group discussions.
Discussion led modules are designed to challenge participants to think about the key information for that topic.
Practical modules are designed for the participant to learn and improve their skills to a safe level of competency.
Evaluation will be throughout the four sessions and the tutorial, and there will be some preparation and/or post session study required.

What to wear?

Please wear flat trainer style shoes that are suitable for exercise. There are many reasons as to why Tai Chi is always performed in shoes which will be discussed in the safety module.
As there will be practical and theory sessions it is important to wear comfortable layered clothing.
