The CSP submitted a response, based on members' comments, to the NICE consultation on guidelines for non-specific low back pain and sciatica in May 2016.

Some of the key issues raised include:

  • concern over the focus on group exercise over individual, when this did not seem to be in line with the evidence review
  • the rationale behind the requirements for superiority of acupuncture over sham. This requirement was not applied to all modalities
  • whether the approach to appraising the evidence for acupuncture was equitable to the approach to the evidence for other modalities.
