With an ageing population, the shift towards care closer to home and increased patient choice, the demand for the services of physiotherapists in the NHS is likely to continue the pattern of growth it has seen over more than a decade, or at least remain stable.
Yet in recent years the number of physiotherapy training places across the UK has dropped dramatically – falling by 30% since 2005 in England alone. The number of training places commissioned by the NHS is now lower than it was in 2000.
These are the conclusions of a new report on the physiotherapy workforce in England published by the independent Centre for Workforce Intelligence (CfWI), which provides advice and information to the NHS and social care system.
This report highlights concerns about the recent decrease in physiotherapy training places and predicts that if they decrease any further the NHS physiotherapy workforce will decline in numbers from 2012.
