Job evaluation

The NHS Job Evaluation scheme and its implementation is a significant element of the Agenda for Change agreement.

The scheme was designed to reflect the unique nature of NHS jobs is used to evaluate all NHS jobs except medical staff, dentists and senior managers.

How the scheme is used to evaluate most NHS jobs and the processes required are set out in the NHS Job Evaluation Handbook. There are two ways to use the scheme, either to 'match' job descriptions to national profiles or to locally evaluate a post.

A key feature of the procedures used is that they are done in partnership by local employers or managers and trade union representatives.

Job evaluation determines the AfC pay band for all NHS posts.

The job evaluation process is overseen by the NHS Staff Council through the Job Evaluation group (JEG).
