Physiotherapy and smoking cessation

All physiotherapy staff have a role to play in helping people to stop smoking.

It is estimated that 18 per cent of all deaths of adults aged 35 and over are caused by smoking.

It is part of all healthcare professionals' roles to ask people they treat if they smoke, and offer advice on how to stop, including physiotherapy.

The concept of asking about a person's smoking status being everybody’s responsibility is embedded in the NICE Quality Standard 43 and NICE Public Health Guideline 48.
