Public Health

Public health is a core priority for UK governments and presents huge opportunities for physiotherapy.

Modern healthcare policy is focused on the promotion of health and wellbeing and the prevention of ill health.

This public health approach, which replaces a system primarily focused on managing ill health, is now absolutely central to UK health and social care policy and attracts significant financial investment.

Public health falls into three main areas:

  • health improvement
  • health protection and
  • health inequalities (addressing unfair inequalities in health that exist between local, national and international populations).

With unique skills, physiotherapy has an invaluable contribution to make, creating huge opportunities for the profession.

For these to be realised, members must understand public health and consider:

  • how they design their services,
  • how they market their services to patients, commissioners and decision makers,
  • potential non-NHS funding opportunities,
  • their own physiotherapy practice.
