Accessing online journals and databases

The CSP provides full-text online resources to support members with continuing professional development (CPD), evidence-based practice and research.

The HPC Standards for CPD state that in order to stay registered, all health professionals must meet the standards by developing their knowledge and skills through a range of CPD activities.

To help members learn, develop and keep their skills and practice up to date, the CSP has put together a package of online resources.

Online journals and databases:

  • Online databases, including access to over 770 full text online journals via the research database CINAHL Plus with Full Text
  • Eguidelines database
  • Physiotherapy journal
  • Additional online full text journals offered by Elsevier
  • Manual Therapy
  • Physiotherapy Frontline
  • E-books via the CSP’s online public access catalogue (OPAC)
  • Links to full text open access journals
  • Individual publisher offers to CSP members, via CSP Plus
  • CSP OPAC with  links to the full text of documents, reports etc.
  • Links to a number of free online databases, such as PEDRO.
  • ePortfolio

Online databases

Access to databases is provided by EBSCOhost. Go to the Bibliographic databases section of the CSP website for further details. The following four databases are available:

CINAHL Plus with Full Text

  • (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)
  • Full text for more than 770 journals and 275 books/monographs

AMED

  • Some full text content provided (Alternative and Complementary Medicine database).
  • Covers physiotherapy, rehabilitation, complementary medicine, occupational therapy, podiatry, palliative care and all allied health subjects.

MEDLINE

  • Some full text content provided.
  • A major source of reference in the biomedical field.

SportDiscus

  • Some full text content provided.
  • International resource for the study of the sports and fitness literature.

Physiotherapy Journal

CSP members have free online access to Physiotherapy, published by Elsevier.

The online archive goes back to 1988.

Additional online journals provided by Elsevier

As an extra benefit, members can access content (published from January 2009) from four further online journals:

  1. Clinical Biomechanics
  2. International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine
  3. Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies
  4. Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice

Manual Therapy

Elsevier are also making selected articles available to members from Manual Therapy, starting with April 2011.

One or two articles will be available to access full text online from each issue.

Physiotherapy Frontline

The archive of Physiotherapy Frontline, going back to December 1995 is available to search.

E-books

The CSP currently subscribes to 6 e-books, all published by Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, all available via the CSP’s online catalogue (you must be logged in).

Full-text open access journals

The CSP’s online catalogue provides links to a number of journals that are available full text, free of charge (open access).

Carry out a journal title search and use the filter feature (Filter) at the top of the screen to limit to e-journals.

CSP Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC)/Library Catalogue

The CSP's online catalogue records the details of all books, CSP publications, journals, theses, reports and other grey literature held in the Learning Resource Centre, as well as useful websites and e-documents.

CSP Plus

The CSP has secured special member rates to the online and print editions of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and to the Maney Health Collection of journals.

These are available via the CSP Plus area of the website.

Free online databases

Details are given for additional online databases that can be accessed.
