The elevator pitch

With commissioners introducing new commissioning structures throughout the UK, physiotherapists need to be increasingly prepared for opportune encounters with commissioners.

File 119758The Elevator pitch helps you to identify succinct messages you would like to convey to the commissioner, should you have a limited amount of time to promote the value of your service.

The key to the elevator pitch is to generate three strong points to promote the added value your service provides and how you help the NHS achieve efficiency savings. Remember that each point should take no longer than 30 seconds to verbalise.

Create your own elevator pitch

Generate 3 positive statements about your service:

  1. Who are you? Make sure commissioners know who you are and what you do.
  2. What does your service deliver? (Include outcome measures if known)
  3. Take home message for the commissioner. One short key message, eg: how you can help the commissioner understand the importance of physiotherapy or how timely physiotherapy can improve patient outcomes and enable quicker discharges.

The 'take home message' for the commissioner will vary depending on the current situation of your service and your motivation. Some key terms you may wish to include:

  • Meeting patient needs
  • Quality
  • Productivity
  • Efficiency
