Continuing professional development: 
  • Physio First has dedicated offices in Northampton and employs a full time general secretary who is available to answer members' queries on a wide range of topics from employment issues, insurance and professional legal topics.
  • A broad spectrum of senior practitioners can advise and support members on a wide range of clinical and professional issues.
  • Physio First has a regional network with a local regional officer who can support you locally.
  • Physio First organises a variety of courses both nationally and regionally which are of particular relevance to private practitioners.
  • Physo First has an Annual Conference held in the spring each year. This is an opportunity for members to meet together socially and to hear lecturers who are nationally and internationally acclaimed in their chosen specialty. Usually over 400 members attend this event and there is also a large trade exhibition.
  • Physio First in collaboration with the University of Brighton has designed and an MSc Independent Practice "Physiotherapy" specifically for Private Practitioners
  • Website: on the home page all Physio First practicing, current members can be listed on 'Find a Physio' a listing for large commercial organisations, purchasers of physiotherapy and members of the public to locate a local physiotherapist. Members can request links to their own sites which provides a free advertising opportunity. There is also a members' area which contains up to date information on business and clinical issues, details of conferences, downloadable documents etc. See www.physiofirst.org.uk
  • Publications: Physio First publishes its own quarterly journal 'In Touch'. This contains information on a wide range of subjects including clinical articles, business related topics, product news, and details of courses and conferences A newsletter 'Update' is also published four times a year which keeps members up to date with professional issues and is a swift method of communicating with members. It also contains news of a local nature and details of Regional meetings and courses.
  • Physio First also produces leaflets, notices and other items for the benefit of members.
  • Email Alerts: Physio First uses this medium to reach the members when the need arises to alert the members of rapidly changing facts.
  • Links with other groups/organisations: Physio First has strong international connections, being one of the founder members of the International Private Practitioners Association (IPPA), which is a sub group of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy. Physio First is represented on the IPPA Executive Committee.
  • There are strong links with the CSP, many members serving on or chairing various committees. Annual meetings are held with the HPC and with large commercial interests in our market.
Promoting research: 
  • Physio First has a research and education officer who helps coordinate and evaluate the centrally run courses.
  • Research/education awards: The Private Physiotherapy Educational Foundation (PPEF) is the charitable arm of Physio First and exists to provide research and educational opportunities for physiotherapists and the general public. Grants are made available to physiotherapists for educational purposes.
Who can join: 
  • Full membership is open to chartered physiotherapists who are self-employed in private practice or who are employed by a limited company substantially owned by chartered physiotherapists. Registration with the Health Proferssions Council as a physiotherapist is necessary.
  • Affiliated membership is open to chartered physiotherapists who are employed in private practice. The practice principal or physiotherapy manager must be a full Physio First member.
  • Non-practicing membership is open to chartered physiotherapists who have previously been full Physio First members but who are not currently practicing (for two years only).
  • Journal membership is open to any chartered physiotherapist, student physiotherapist, or non-physiotherapist. Retired membership is open to those who have been full Physio First members for at least three previous years.
Expectations of members: 

Its Rules of Professional Conduct and Standards of Practice bind all members of the Chartered Society, regardless of whether they work within the public or private sector.

  • It is a key expectation that members should 'own the brand' of Physio First and participate in all the various activities in order to gain the maximum benefit of membership.

Membership year 2017 - 2018

Full membership: if you join Physio First as a full member the initial cost is £268.

Affiliated membership: if you fulfil the requirements of an affiliate member the initial cost is £249.
