CSP responds to new Kings Fund report

CSP press release published on 23 January 2018

The King’s Fund has released a report on the significance of joined up community services and multidisciplinary teams.

The document highlights the current state of services, and details what needs to change. It also gives working examples of good practise throughout the country.

Prof Karen Middleton, chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said:

‘In order for there to be significant improvement in the community services referred to in the Kings Fund report, the whole system needs to see it has a vested interest in getting it right.

‘The system benefits from community rehab by reducing demand into primary care and the acute sector, as well as reducing the costs of social care.

‘But more importantly, community rehab means patients are more likely to live an independent and fulfilled life rather than simply exist.’

The Kings Fund is calling for the government to make community services a priority for any additional NHS funding, and says it understands that ‘it’s not realistic to expect reductions in acute hospital capacity to pay for extra spending on services in the community at a time when hospitals are working under intense pressure.’
