Natalie Beswetherick, director of practice and development at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said:

‘The record number of delayed discharges shows that winter pressures are biting even earlier – and even harder – this year.

‘These figures come on the back of recent concerns about a cash and beds crisis in residential care.

‘Keeping people in hospital for longer than they need to be takes an enormous toll on patients and their families, and costs the NHS money it can ill afford.

‘Investing in community services, including physiotherapy, is the only way to reduce delayed discharges, save the NHS money and get people home quicker.’
