CSP statement on long-term care

CSP press release published on 3 July 2014

Responding to a Health Select Committee report published today about managing the care of people with long-term conditions, Professor Karen Middleton, chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said:

“The committee is right to focus on how we can help people to manage their long-term condition and live full, independent lives.

"In too many places across the country, community physiotherapy services that cut hospital admissions and improve quality of life are either limited or absent entirely, with consequences for patients and NHS budgets.

“Additionally, too many patients must still get a referral from their GP for physiotherapy, when providing direct access would cut waiting times and improve the outcome of treatment.

“We need properly-commissioned preventative services that can deliver care closer to home if we are to address this urgent issue.”
