Team named CSP physiotherapy service of the year

A team of Swansea physiotherapists has won two prestigious profession-wide awards for their specialist work with lymphoedema patients.

The Abertawe Bro Morgannwg NHS University Health Board (ABM) Lymphoedema Team, was crowned physiotherapy service of the year and also picked up the delivering quality and demonstrating impact award at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy's (CSP) Annual Awards, held today at the Hotel Russell in London.

Established in 2001 with just one physiotherapist, the lymphoedema service now has 14 staff, more than 2,000 patients on the case load and has developed lymphoedema prevention and cancer rehabilitation schemes for breast, gynaecology, skin, head and neck cancers. Through streamlining referrals and encouraging self-management, the team has also reduced referrals to other specialties, cut the work load of primary care staff and decreased the likelihood of hospital admissions due to infection.

Sue Rees, chair of Council at the CSP, said:

'The CSP awards recognise physiotherapists who show innovation and excellence to provide even better services for patients.

'Lymphoedema patients in Swansea and the surrounding area have excellent access to treatment and support, thanks to the dedication and commitment of the service. The team's awards are both richly deserved.'

The event is sponsored by Elsevier, worldwide publishers of science and health information.
