The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy responds to Primary and Community Care strategy

CSP press release published on 3 July 2008

Responding to 'Our vision for Primary and Community Care’, published today by the Department of Health as part of the Next Stage Review of the NHS, Phil Gray, chief executive at the CSP, said:

'This strategy recognises that physiotherapy and other Allied Health Professions are core to developing more effective, accessible and cost efficient services. Physiotherapists, like other Allied Health Professionals, recognise the value of quality of life, not only to the individual but to society as a whole. To achieve this, access to the right service/professionals at the right time is essential. Physiotherapists can, for example, help reduce unplanned admission to hospital for people living with a long-term condition or prevent the onset of long-term incapacity as a result of musculoskeletal problems common in the working age population. 'Self-referral to physiotherapy has been shown to improve access and choice for patients in a straightforward and cost-effective way. It promotes individual personal responsibility for health, increases user satisfaction and enables best use of GP time. It gives individuals direct access to the service they need to help them manage their condition effectively. Such access is key - research indicates that early intervention for low back pain in employees enables a return to work up to five weeks earlier and the recent England self-referral pilots have shown that those who self-refer to physiotherapy take fewer days off work as a result. 'Physiotherapists are committed to delivering accessible and patient-centred services, promoting health and reducing health inequalities. Physiotherapy looks forward to playing a key role in achieving the vision identified in the strategy.' DH document Primary and community care strategy   ENDS Notes to editors 1.
