CSP supports British Heart Foundation cardiac rehab campaign

CSP press release published on 5 December 2007

The CSP is supporting the British Heart Foundation campaign to improve access to cardiac rehabilitation

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) is supporting the British Heart Foundation (BHF) campaign to improve access to cardiac rehabilitation, an inexpensive treatment that is proven to save lives.

Earlier this year, a BHF audit revealed a postcode lottery for services, where 60 per cent of those who need cardiac rehabilitation do not have access to it (see note 3). The CSP is therefore calling for increased investment in rehabilitation services to ensure patients receive the support and treatment they so vitally need.

The average cost of a cardiac rehabilitation programme is £600, substantially less than the £1,400 cost for a single day in a cardiac care unit. It is widely recognised that people can find it difficult to stick to an exercise regime, especially after they start to feel better after a cardiac problem. Physiotherapists can help motivate and advise on continuing exercise as well as offering expert rehabilitation services.

Liz Cavan, CSP Chair of Council, said, “Physiotherapy is integral to cardiac rehabilitation, using exercise training, education and counselling to cut cardiac mortality by 27 per cent. However, the BHF survey found that only a tiny fraction of the 66,000 people newly diagnosed with heart failure and practically none of the 345,000 new cases of angina each year will receive rehabilitation.”

Similarly, people with acute coronary syndrome - those with acute symptoms but not yet resulting in a heart attack - are mostly excluded from rehabilitation despite the huge potential to prevent them going on to have a heart attack.
