Evidence-based practice and health policy development: the link between knowledge and action

Abstract

While it is generally understood that sound research and evidence-based practice have a positive impact on patient treatment, the potential influence of these factors on policy-makers in the healthcare system is less well understood. Therefore, in an attempt to help physical therapists understand the links between research, practice, and policy, this paper outlines important aspects of knowledge transfer, explains complexities of the public policy process, and examines major theoretical frameworks used in political science which can be of benefit to the profession. The paper concludes with key questions whose answers would help transcend the barriers between research and policy and, thus, enhance the profile of physical therapy within the health policy community.
