CSP responds to investigation into maternity and neonatal services

In response to Baroness Amos’ independent investigation, the government has said it will take urgent steps to overhaul maternity and neonatal care.

Maternity leave and pay rights

Baroness Amos’ Independent Investigation into Maternity and Neonatal Services in England has identified key concerns, barriers to change, and eight recommendations for lasting systemic and cultural transformation.

The report emphasises the urgent need to listen to mothers and families. This is imperative for safer births and equitable access to care after birth, including rehab.

In response, the government has announced:

  • the creation of the UK’s first ever maternity and neonatal commissioner

  • a National Action Plan to be published in December to overhaul services and drive long-term change

  • £41 million investment to improve safety at maternity and neonatal facilities

  • new standards for maternity triage across the country

Siân Caulfield, head of equity, diversity and belonging at the CSP, said:

The heartbreak of mothers, families, and babies who have been let down by maternity and neonatal services should be at the forefront of our thoughts as we digest this report.

Women, families and staff must be able to have their concerns met within a safe and compassionate system.

The investigation consistently highlights inequalities in maternity and neonatal services, with people's experiences varying according to factors including ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language, disability and gender.

Siân Caulfield added that:  'The report highlights that racism and discrimination is deeply ingrained.

We know that Black mothers receive worse care within maternity services and this landmark investigation must be the clarion call for tackling racism and discrimination in healthcare.

The CSP, along with trade unions, professional bodies and the NHS will continue to advocate for improved and equitable access to rehab for mothers and babies.
