The awards recognise the contribution of AHPs to public health and Ms Harniess wanted a project relevant in her own locality.

‘I’m really interested in health inequality and smoking is one of the key drivers of this in Tower Hamlets, where I live,’ she said.

Her research found that while shisha cafes are popular with adolescents, their hygiene, ventilation and tobacco products are poorly regulated.

‘I thought my research fits in with Public Health England’s priorities around giving every child the best start and stopping smoking in young people,’ said Ms Harniess.
