Pupils from Cwrt Sart school in Neath, Wales are taking part in the mentoring scheme

The e-mentoring scheme is run by educational charity the Mullany Fund, which aims to inspire and support children who are keen to work in healthcare professions.

Natalie Beswetherick, the CSP’s director of practice and development, told Frontline: ‘Physiotherapists make excellent mentors. Not only is this a great opportunity for personal development, but volunteering to participate in this excellent scheme will also enable you to positively impact on the career of a potential future leader of the physiotherapy profession.’

The online project is designed to put aspiring medical and healthcare students, from a range of social backgrounds, in touch with professionals who can provide advice on education and career options.

The mentoring roles are designed to be flexible, allowing volunteers to communicate with mentees at convenient times, and volunteers are not expected to be expert advisers. The Mullany Fund will provide e-mentors with training and access to online resources that will help them to build effective, meaningful relationships with mentees.

Camilla Ducker, a GP and trustee with the charity, told Frontline: ‘Our vision is of a nation where talented, motivated individuals are not excluded from a career in medicine or healthcare because of poverty or any other disadvantage.

‘Access to knowledge is key to widening access to education. And we already have mentees who really would like to enter a career in physiotherapy.’

The Mullany Fund was set up in memory of a student physiotherapist and his wife. Ben Mullany was a second-year physio student at the University of the West of England and his wife, Catherine Mullany, was a doctor. The couple were murdered during their honeymoon in Antigua in 2008.
