London marathon physio wants to share learning from Boston trip

11 June 2014 - 12:04pm

A physiotherapist who manages the physio centre at the London marathon finish line hopes a trip to the Boston marathon could lead to the creation of an international network of marathon physios.

Rory Brown, who has been lead physio for the finish at London for the last two years, went to the US in April to run the Boston race. While there, he decided to make contact with the event organisers and learn more about their way of working.

He was given the opportunity to shadow Dave Nolan, lead physical therapist for the Boston marathon, and received a tour of the medical facilities set up for the event. He also watched physios and other healthcare workers provide treatment to runners at precursor, shorter races on the day before the marathon.

Now Mr Brown hopes to bring some of what he saw back to London and intends to improve links with physios at other big city marathons.

‘On the doctor and medical director side there is a good network and they share information, but on the physio side there is very little,’ he said.

‘I’ve thought for a while that it would be great to share ideas and information with those working on world marathon majors, and it would be great to make contact in person or via the internet.’

Physios who have experience of organising support for marathons can contact Mr Brown by email at
