The Welsh Government’s three-year plan to improve respiratory care services has been welcomed by the CSP.

Philippa Ford, CSP policy officer for Wales, said: ‘The national respiratory health delivery plan will be particularly important to the physiotherapy profession’.

The plan, launched by health minister Mark Drakeford on 29 April  at the Welsh Parliament in Cardiff, sets out how better healthcare outcomes for patients with respiratory disease can be achieved.

The main actions are

  • preventing poor respiratory health by raising awareness of healthy lifestyles and the consequences of poor respiratory health
  • detecting respiratory disease quickly
  • delivering fast, effective treatment and care for respiratory conditions, reciprocated by patients taking responsibility for lifestyle choices
  • supporting people living with lung disease
  • better access to information for patients, health professionals and service planners to help them make informed decisions about care and treatment
  • targeting research and ensuring appropriate access to clinical trials that can lead to better outcomes for patients

‘Respiratory disease is an area where physiotherapy can make a difference to the lives of people and empower them to manage their conditions,’ said Ms Ford.

The document says that physiotherapy has a major role in the management, for example, of bronchiectasis and physiotherapists can help to reduce infections and hospital admissions for the condition.

Each local health board is required to develop a delivery plan setting out how it will achieve the respiratory health care outcomes established in the document.

‘It will be essential that physiotherapy services are involved in the development of local delivery plans across all the health boards,’ said Ms Ford.

Respiratory disease is the cause of one in seven of all deaths in Wales and the third largest cause of death for both women and men in the country.
